BATFE Letter: Reversal of Opinion on Use

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has issued several letters regarding the legality of SB Tactical Pistol Stabilizing Braces, including this letter from 2017 that reverses the ATF’s 2015 Open Letter position on legal “use” of SB Tactical Pistol Stabilizing Braces.

The bottom line: The ATF has consistently stated that the SB Tactical Pistol Stabilizing Brace is legal to own, legal to purchase and legal to install on a pistol. As of March 2017, the ATF’s opinion is that a pistol with an unmodified SB Tactical Pistol Stabilizing Brace attached remains a pistol under the Gun Control Act regardless of how it is “used”.
